CELEBRITIES SUPPORT FERNDALE RALLY FOR PROPOSAL B/ INSTANT RUNOFF VOTING

Ferndale, MI – October 8, 2004 – Celebrity musicians Jello Biafra and Krist Novoselic will address a special Rally for Proposal B in Ferndale regarding Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) this Saturday, Oct. 9, 1-3 pm, at Xhedos Cafe‚ in Ferndale (240 W 9 Mile). Biafra is the former lead singer for the seminal punk group the Dead Kennedys, now famous for years of "spoken-word" events where he packs halls with a youthful audience for hours of political discussion. Novoselic is the former bassist for Nirvana, one of the most influential bands of the '90s, and is also the author of "Of Grunge & Government: Let's Fix Our Broken Democracy." Both are leading national advocates for IRV. Biafra and Novoselic will address the rally via a phone-connection.

Also speaking is David Moon, Program Director of the Center for Voting & Democracy, a Takoma Park, Maryland non-profit organization headed by former presidential candidate John Anderson, that is dedicated to making elections more fair. Moon will be flying in from San Francisco to attend the rally. Other speakers include Sean Kosofsky of the Triangle Foundation and Ferndale Mayor Pro Tem, Craig Covey. Music will be provided by Sue and Stacie Trescott, founders of the Green House and publishers of Jam Rag, a local music/politics magazine. The Rally will also feature videos, a mock demonstration election to show how IRV works, along with general volunteer organizing.

Stacie Trescott, meanwhile, has pledged to walk to every home in Ferndale before the election, in support of IRV. So far, she has completed almost nine of the 16 precincts. In all, she will hit about 10,000 homes. "I've already worn out one pair of shoes. My foot literally came out the front!" said Trescott. "Ferndale is a beautiful town, and it is a privilege to see every inch, and talk to so many wonderful Ferndale residents about IRV."

Instant Runoff Voting is on the ballot in Ferndale this November (Proposal B), and is supported by Mayor Robert Porter, Mayor Pro Tem Craig Covey and Council Members Scott Galloway and Helen Weber, as well as The Oakland Press among a host of others.
